Sustainability and good environmental practice is central to the ethos of our work. The business was born from a desire to produce living, holiday and work space using the wonderful timber available here in the South West. There are many offerings within our industry made from unsustainable, imported or low quality materials, meaning they have a short lifespan, require high maintenance and offer not much in the way of comfort and warmth. We wanted to present an alternative that was both beautiful and sustainable.
We encourage the concept of low-impact living, and indeed live in one of our Wagons ourselves. Many people are keen to move away from the conventional bricks / mortar / mortgage way of life and the rise in the tiny house movement is testament to that. We see Barrel Top Wagons as supporting that movement but rather than the modular, whimsical fancies available we offer solid, robust, practical living space.
Our waste sawdust is processed into bio-logs, perfect for use in wood burners, and our waste wood is either taken to be used by a local company for MDF, or by local crafts people to use as a material for projects, extending the life of this versatile resource. Our Wagons, Cabins and Lodges are super insulated with Earthwool making them cool in summer and super cosy in winter. We manufacture and promote the use of compost and dry toilets, and also offer solar technology as part of the energy provision within the structures.
We aim to source as many of our materials as possible from within the South West - from wood burners to chassis to windows to that all important locally grown wood. This reduces transportation miles and contributes to a healthy, local economy. We were finalists in the Devon Environmental Business Initiative Awards in 2015 - a real boost to be recognised for our efforts regarding sustainability.
